Artist Biography
Whether it be musical instruments or arts and crafts, Norma Vestey has always loved working with her hands. As a young pianist, Norma was known as a piano prodigy, playing classical music on the radio and making recordings. She has always had an appreciation for glass art. However, career and family did not afford her the time to develop her skills as a glass artist.
While living in Southern California Norma spent most of her time raising children, and working for the Walt Disney Company. She was based at their Imagineering facility in Glendale as an Administrative Assistant in the Estimating Department. From there she went to work for Universal Studios, and was instrumental in helping them during the planning stage for designing and building a theme park in Japan. When they began to offer classes in Japanese for those being considered to work in Japan, Norma was asked to take the classes. She took many of the classes, however she elected not to work in Japan and subsequently left the studio, choosing to retire.
Norma retired to Florence about eleven years ago. Retirement gave her the opportunity to learn stained glass while in Florence. Norma has taken many classes which have allowed her to complement formal training with her personal artistic talents, and then took interest in fused glass. Norma has accepted commissions for stained glass art pieces, and has recently expanded as a fused glass artist and has taken on commissions on fused art.
The subject matter of Norma’s glass art
is generally focused on our natural environment, and
scenes of flora and fauna. Her subjects have evolved.
Presently she is working on creating original pieces,
some of which carry a message. She not only wants
her art to be enjoyed, she also wants it to be a catalyst
for thinking.
Norma was with Backstreet Gallery Co-op
for about a year and looks forward to further developing
her art and promoting the arts in Florence.
