Sylvia Pishioneri

Artist Statement

I started drawing and painting at an early age. I attended Pepperdine University and Southwestern Community College in California, finishing up at the e University of Oregon with a B.A. in Art History. Unable to find employment in the arts after college, I opened my own sewing business and concentrated on custom design. I returned to school after my husband’s successful treatment for cancer to become a registered nurse. My artistic side now became a welcome respite from the stress of hospital nursing, and I began to work in watercolor and pastel. I have studied with Jan Kunz, Katheryn Davis, Richard McDaniel, and Kitty Wallis. I have been a member of the Florence Plein Air Painters, and have received a merit award at the Florence (Oregon) Festival of the Arts. I have also exhibited at the Florence Public Library, Peace Harbor Hospital, Old Town Coffee & Gallery, The River Gallery, and the Redwood City (California) Art Center. I currently have an exhibition of photos at the Mora Gallery at the Carmel Mission, Carmel, California.

In my current works, I am exploring the medium of computer manipulation and digital inkjet printing. To me, the computer and digital printer are simply new tools to be explored and manipulated, like any paper, canvas, pastel or brush. It is more than just downloading a photo to be reproduced or enhanced. The subject, style, color, finished size, and paper must all carefully be considered and adjusted before the finished product can be printed. It resembles the serigraphic (silkscreen) process in that layers of color are applied to paper, but it is done all in one pass through the printer rather than in a series of different colors of screens.
